Syn:picture, illustration, image; diagram, graph, chart; (graphics) art, visual art••graphic, pictorial, picturesque, vividA photograph of a car accident on the front page of a newspaper might be described as graphic, while a photograph of a mountain village would be called picturesque. Both adjectives are used to describe things that have visual impact or that produce a strong, clear impression, but graphic means having the power to evoke a strikingly lifelike representation, whether it is in pictures or in words (the driving instructor gave them a graphic description of what happens in a 50-mph head-on collision). Vivid is a more general term suggesting something that is felt, seen, heard, or apprehended with a sense of intense reality (the vivid colors of the landscape; a vivid memory of the horrors of war). Something that is pictorial aims to present a vivid picture (a pictorial writing style), while picturesque usually applies to scenes, pictures, etc. that are visually striking because they are panoramic, quaint, or unusual (from a distance the village looked picturesque, but up close it was seen to be rundown).
